Windows 11 to release on Oct 5 for free

Finally Microsoft,  in a blog post, has announced the much-awaited Windows 11 released date and it is on October 5th and Windows 10 users can upgrade to it for free.

Windows 11 claims to be one of the best-operating systems for gamers with DirectStorage technology, Auto HDR and DX12 Ultimate. Microsoft is also working with Amazon and Intel to bring Android apps to the operating systems a few months down the line.

Will you get it on October 5th?

While existing Windows 10 users can upgrade to Windows 11 for free, don't get too excited already. Users planning to avail the free upgrade from Windows 10 might have to wait a little longer. Microsoft has planned a phased rollout to ensure that they don't mess up as they did with major Windows 10 updates.

The latest devices will be the first to receive the update and it will be rolled out to older devices over time based on hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, and how old the device is. In fact, it will be mid-2022 when all eligible devices will be migrated to Windows 11. Be sure to check if your system is eligible for the upgrade here and the minimum system requirements of 64-bit dual-core processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and TPM 2.0 chip.

Even if your computer isn't officially eligible, you can still do a fresh install of Windows 11 through an ISO file, but such installations are not likely to receive further updates and security patches. Hence sticking to Windows 10 might be a better idea for such systems till Microsoft pulls the plug on October 14, 2025.

If you are so eager and can't wait, you can try the latest build of Windows 11 Insider Preview.
